IBM TotalStorage & CommVault Galxy for SQL Server

Non-disruptive IBM backup and recovery portfolio by leveraging and promoting best practices for disk-to-disk (D2D) backup of SQL Server 2000 databases using IBM SATA technology (powered by the DS4000 storage subsystem controllers) combined with industry leading backup software. The Solution demonstrates how to integrated Microsoft's VSS(Volume Shadow Copy Service) and the point-in-time copy feature on the storage subsystem.

Components include: one SQL Server 2000/Windows 2003 server utilizing SAN attached storage, one CommVault Galaxy backup server utilizing SAN attached storage for the backup data.

Key Benefits

Disk-to-Disk (D2D) backup addresses the limitations of tape with inexpensive SATA disk-making disk backup economically feasible for many. The goal of this solution is not to completely replace tape, but to transition a portion of the user's backup process to disk in order to address the most critical service level challenges.

Some of key benefits for using SATA drives for backup are:

Non-streaming, random access of disk is a better match for the random, inconsistent streams backup produce
Disk can be constantly monitored for failure-a faulty drive can be replaced without data lose or service interruption. With tape, you never know the status of a tape until it is used
Disk can be protected via RAID without major performance impacts. Tape RAID exists, but it causes a performance impact on streaming
